The Comparison Trap

A few months back during a prayer group, one of the women had told us how she reached out to another women in the group and asked her if this woman could teach her to pray. She knew this women well and loved the way she was so eloquent with her words and public prayer style. The women asked spoke up and said she told the requester no. She felt it was important that she stick with her own prayer style because that was a specific style to her. The women also said something that I often remember, ‘If I taught you to pray the way I pray, then you would pray like me. Your style is specific to you and that is important’.
The women was caught in a comparison trap even among her peers where she felt most safe and unjudged. This women, who I admire and look up to and some times compare myself to, looks to others just as I look to her.
Today, I was reminded of this as I sat in a local moms prayer group at the park. The women sitting next to me spoke beautifuly. So much so, that I didn’t even catch half of what she was asking God because I got caught up in my thoughts and how well her words rolled off her tongue. The point of our group this morning was to pray for our community, to pray for our children, families and school. Jesus said, “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:20‬ ‭NLT‬‬. Now tell me how effective I was and how ‘gathered’ I was if I was so caught up in the sound of her words? What if every single person sitting there was lost in comparing themselves to her speaking style just as I was? Did God hear us call out to him as we prayed for protection, guidance, peace and understanding? This is a question I cannot not answer but it sure was a wake up call!
Believers are not immune to the dreaded comparison trap. It is like a virus that can infect anyone. Infect. Contaminate. Poison. Damage.
Comparison is DANGEROUS
How effective are we in living out Gods word if we are so wrapped up in comparison that we cannot fully live out His plan for us
In these moments of comparison, remember, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬
God made you a masterpiece. You will never be like anyone else. You will always be beautiful you. Always
